Phytoplankton upcycled plates

This is your first time looking at these microalgae. You didn’t even know they existed nor that this is mostly thanks to them that you’re breathing.

You look at the microscope and here is a brand new world swimming under your eyes! They all look different. You can see some that look like little stars, others swimming in chains. It’s beautiful. You feel full of joy and want to keep looking at them.

This is how I felt when I was working in labs and studying phytoplankton. Even after 15 years I was still excited looking at them. And I had to paint them with watercolour.

I upcycled this plate with ceramic decals of a mixture of my favourite ones. Because I fired the plate, the paintings are now bonded with the glaze of the original piece and are permanent. This is safe to use with food. It is also dishwasher and microwave safe.
